Dear Readers,
I wanted to take a moment to welcome you to my site and let you know a little bit about me.
As a child I always knew I wanted to help people by working in a medical field that involved lots of people contact. I entered the University of Minnesota in the late 60’s and was admitted into their physical therapy program, which was a remarkable match to everything I had been looking for in a career path. In the spring of 1973 I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in PT.
During the course of my 30+ year PT career, the most rewarding positions have been those where I have had the privilege working with the elderly. I fully understand and appreciate the challenges that we Baby-Boomers face helping senior loved ones stay independent in their homes. Since 1990, I spent several years working as a clinical specialist and in-patient supervisor at Saint Johns Hospital in Santa Monica, California, and in the home health environment, administering physical therapy to patients who were fortunate enough to be able to return to their homes following their hospitalization. I also worked at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, where my caseload consisted primarily of elderly patients, many of whom were recovering from orthopedic surgery or recent strokes.
As hospital stays became increasingly shorter, it was even more crucial to properly evaluate each patient for discharge to an appropriate setting. An important part of my job involved assessing patient safety and making recommendations for equipment and/or home modifications. I worked closely with patient family members and met with interdisciplinary teams of medical professionals to insure the best possible discharge plan for each patient. I became a strong advocate for these older patients with their individualized needs, especially in the context of a financially burdened medical system that was eager to move them out of the hospital. I fought very hard to give these seniors as much treatment as possible, as they were desperately trying to hold on to their independent status. Too often, however, following a fall and subsequent hip fracture, patients would no longer be able to return to independence at home. For many of those people, including my own mother, that was the beginning of a sad, short-lived ending.
Many of those falls could have been prevented by a home safety evaluation, patient/family education, a few new devices, modifications in the home environment, and/or attendance in an Adult Day Care or Adult Day Health Care program (ADHC). This preventative and proactive approach is where my arrow is now pointing. Currently I am working in an ADHC environment where I am able to help these frail seniors, many who live alone, prevent functional decline. Every day there is an overwhelming amount of new technology and new research pertinent to seniors living at home. I read these articles on a regular basis and personally research my highlighted products and services. I am using my skills to make Senior Safety at Home a relevant, informative, and supportive resource for Baby-Boomers and their elderly loved ones. My goal is to alleviate your stress and confusion by sifting through the vast amount of information out there, providing you with the best tools available to help your senior loved ones remain in their homes.
